Isolated from Gotland’s “main land” by the strait of Fårösund, the island of Fårö may be found to the north. The island of Fårö is the eighth-largest in Sweden. Fårö has an area of 114 km2 and a population of 500 people as of the end of 2019. Visby is located 56 kilometres from the city centre, and Fårösund is the closest body of water. The ferry route over the Fårösund from Gotland and Fårösund to Fårö does not incur tolls. It has been proposed to replace the current ferry with a bridge over the Fårösund. The ferry ride from Fårösund to Broa on Fårö takes around seven and a half minutes.
Fårö is covered primarily by a lush forest with several species of trees and shrubs. It also features several sparsely populated rural areas and outlying settlements. Ullahau is an isolated area of flying sand on the island. Many areas of the island have cliffs, such as old harbour, Digerhuvud, and Langhammars.
