Abies, sometimes known as fir cones, are the cones of 48 to 56 different species of evergreen coniferous trees in the family Pinaceae. The highlands of North and Central America, Europe, Asia, and North Africa all have this animal. Cedrus is the genus’ closest relative (cedar).
The Latin word for “to rise” (from which the genus name is derived) was chosen because of the towering nature of its members.
The Old Norse and Old Danish words fyri and fyr provided the basis for the modern English name.
They grow to be quite tall trees, anything from 10 to 80 metres (33 to 262 feet), with trunk diameters of 0.5 to 4 metres (1 to 13 feet, 1 inch). The needle-like leaves of firs are attached singly to the branches with a base resembling a suction cup, setting them apart from other pines; similarly, fir cones, like those of true cedars, stand erect on the branches like candles and disintegrate when they reach maturity, setting them apart from other pines.
Cone size and form, leaf size and arrangement, and whether the bract scales of the cone are large and protruding or short and buried inside the cone can all be used to distinguish between the many species.
