A railway track (British English) or railroad track (American English), also known as a permanent way or simply track, is the structure on a railway or railroad that includes the rails, fasteners, railroad ties (sleepers, British English), and ballast (or slab track), as well as the underlying subgrade. It allows trains to travel by providing a stable surface for their wheels to roll on. Early tracks were built using wooden or cast iron rails and stone sleepers; since the 1870s, rails have almost always been made of steel.
