Sandviken is located between Sysne udd and Gryngudd in eastern Gotland, Sandviken is both a bay and a nature reserve that is part of the Natura 2000 network.

The nature reserve has a swimming beach that is 600 metres long and 150 metres wide, as well as a forest area beyond the beach.  Near the water forms a roughly 20-meter-wide valley of low dynes where beach weed, rörsvingel, and kvickrot, as well as the sandsallaten that was introduced to Gotland in recent times, dominate the local vegetation. The area in front of the dykes is covered by a sandy plain 40-80 metres wide that is home to a variety of plants and animals, including backtimjan, gulmra, harklöver, höskallra and gulkämpar, as well as enar and small groups of pine trees.

Sysne udd is a bay on the southern coast of Gotland near Gammelgarns parish on the island of Gotland. Sysne, a popular fishing harbour, may be found on the western shore of Sysne.

A gravesite from the 1808 Russian occupation of Gotland near Sysne udd. Carl Fredrik Lindström Lindgren (1779-1808), was the only survivor of a fall from the rigging of King Gustav IV Adolf’s lineship, the Sandviken. On May 15, 1808, the Swedish Undeclared Expedition landed at Sandviken with a 2,000-man strong army.

In Swedish, stergarnslandet means “land on and around a broad outcrop on the eastern coast of Gotland.”
The Länsstyrelsen on Gotland includes the stergarns, Gammelgarns, Ardre, Kräklingbo, and Anga socknar in its designations of maintenance areas. From Svartdal in the direction of Gammelgarn to the west and from Kräklingbo to the east, the traffic control system covers a rather small area. A brown and white tourist sign reading “Östergarnslandet” is shown.

In the middle of the 1600s, the Kingdom of Sweden annexed the historic Kräklinge judicial district.

Originally from the north of Gotland, the Östergarns parish have been a part of the city of Gotland since 1971 and the Östergarns district since 2016.

Area of the parish is 28,29 square kilometres, or 28,28 square miles. In 2010, there were 197 people working here. The town of Katthammarsvik, the herrgården of Katthamra, and the curch of Östergarn all sit in the parish.
